The Role of Peasants in the Feudal System
Medieval Europe was structured around a hierarchical system known as feudalism, where the land was owned by nobles, and peasants (or serfs) worked the land in exchange for protection and a small share of the harvest. The majority of medieval peasants were either serfs or free peasants, with serfs being bound to the land they worked, unable to leave without their lord's permission. Free peasants, on the other hand, had more rights, including the ability to rent land, but they still lived under the influence of local lords and were often heavily taxed.
Feudalism was a system of mutual obligation. While lords provided protection to their peasants in exchange for labor, peasants were essential for the economy as they were the primary producers of food, which kept society functioning. The peasants’ work, particularly in agriculture, was the backbone of the medieval economy, as it supplied both the lords and the broader population with food and resources.
The Daily Life of a Peasant
The daily life of a medieval peasant was primarily centered around agriculture, as farming was the main occupation for most peasants. They lived in rural villages, often within the confines of a manor, which was the land owned by a noble or lord. A typical peasant family would have a small cottage, typically made of wood, with a thatched roof. Inside, they had little in terms of furniture—usually just a hearth, a table, a few chairs, and perhaps a bed.
Farming was incredibly labor-intensive. Peasants spent much of their time tending to crops such as wheat, barley, oats, and rye, which were the staple foods of the medieval diet. They also raised livestock, including cattle, sheep, pigs, and chickens, which provided milk, meat, wool, and eggs. The work was seasonal: in the spring, peasants planted crops, in the summer, they weeded and watered them, and in the autumn, they harvested. During the winter, peasants spent time repairing tools, tending to animals, and engaging in other forms of maintenance. shutdown123
